Consecrated in 1840, All Saints Nunhead is one of the seven Victorian cemeteries to have been established as a commercially operated garden cemetery in a ring around the outskirts of London. Kensal Green, West Norwood, Highgate, Abney Park, Brompton and Tower Hamlets are the other six which encompass what is now commonly referred to as The Magnificent Seven.
In this winter study of the cemetery I wish to emphasise the interconnectdness of Nunhead’s Victorian past with its current function as space for burials and urban green area whilst bringing to light the mundane yet surreal encounters one makes while wandering amongst its graves and paths.
